Crystalens

For most of us, our vision remains stable until our late 40's. At that time, the eye's natural crystalline lens begins to gradually enlarge and harden. This is followed by the eventual formation of a cataract. Over time, it becomes difficult for the muscle in the eye to automatically focus your lens on the people and things in your life that matter most. This is known as loss of accommodation, or presbyopia, and its earliest symptom is difficulty seeing things close-up.

Tony Weaver, M.D., Ken Kato, M.D. and Jerry Ford, M.D. were the first ophthalmologists between Panama City and Jacksonville fully certified to offer the Crystalens ... the first and only FDA- approved accommodating intraocular lens (IOL).  Crystalens provides continuous clear vision near, far and everywhere in-between.  In most cases, glasses and contacts become a thing of the past.

Crystalens®
Crystalens is the first and only FDA-approved naturally focusing (accommodating) vision-correction lens replacement for adults with cataracts and presbyopia.  This technology is the only lens available in the United States to provide a continuous range of vision for distance, intermediate, near and everything in between.

  • 93.8 % of patients can perform most daily activities, such as shopping or applying makeup, without glasses after the crystalens procedure.
  • 98.4% of patients implanted with crystalens in both eyes had vision which was good enough to pass a driver’s licensure exam after surgery.
  • 100% of patients had improved intermediate vision (24” to 30”), which means they could see their computer screen or items at arms length without glasses. *

Crystalens works with your natural eye lens…
The Crystalens is designed to move backward and forward along the axis of your eye using the same muscle as your natural lens.  The implant works with your eye muscles naturally and allows your eye to respond to pressure changes when your eye muscles relax and contract.  This enables your eye to focus seamlessly at all distances, including near, far and in-between.  Because the Crystalens allows your eye to “flex” to accommodate focus at all distances, in most cases you will not need glasses to perform everyday tasks like working at the computer, gardening, and balancing your checkbook.
Crystalens is effective no matter where you are…
As well as allowing you to see at any distance, Crystalens performs well in any lighting environment.  Because the Crystalens implant works naturally with your eye, going from light to dark and back again becomes an effortless process.

Crystalens is the most advanced intraocular lens (IOL) currently available, yet the previous Medicare reimbursement policy did not allow its beneficiaries to opt for this breakthrough technology for cataract surgery.  Seniors on Medicare now can opt for the presbyopia-correcting crystalens, which focuses and moves in the eye like the natural lens thanks to its proprietary accommodating characteristics.  The crystalens is designed to treat two conditions: cataract removal with lens replacement (a procedure covered by Medicare) and presbyopia (a non-covered service).  Patients who select crystalens will receive the standard Medicare reimbursement for cataract surgery, and can now pay privately for the presbyopic portion of the treatment.

Tony A. Weaver, M.D.
"I have been very impressed with the results we have been getting. Crystalens is the first eye implant that can focus perfectly while zooming in and out. All of us over forty who have lost the ability to see up close and/or at a distance can appreciate what a big deal this is. In most cases, glasses and contacts become a thing of the past."
