Dr. Skilling was born in Miami Beach, Florida. He graduated cum laude from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. He then received his M.D. Degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Medicine. He served as a U.S. Navy medical officer before completing his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. He moved to Tallahassee in 1978 to join Dr. Lee Elgin, Jr. to form what is now Eye Associates of Tallahassee, P.A.
Dr. Skilling is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an active fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a comprehensive ophthalmologist and has a special interest in children's eye disorders. He also has an interest in neuro-ophthalmology and eye movement disorders.
He is married to Karen W. Skilling, and they have three children, all born in Tallahassee. Dr. & Mrs. Skilling have served as medical volunteers in Africa, the Caribbean and Indonesia.
Dr. Skilling has served in different capacities for the medical staffs at both Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and Capital Regional Medical Center. He is a contributor to the Capital Medical Society's CapScan publication. He is a member of the selection committee for the FSU College of Medicine and serves as a clinical preceptor for both the medical school and the Tallahassee Memorial Family Practice Program. He was recognized for his contributions to medical education by the American Academy of Family Practice. He continues to serve, as he has for many years, as a consultant to the Children's Medical Services for the Florida Department of Children and Families. He is currently the ophthalmology consultant for the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee.
